How a Water Well Actually Works

Two Aquifers, and the Springs Below

Comal County hands a driller one of the trickiest groundwater settings in Texas. Two aquifers, two authorities, and a spring system fed by the rock decide how a well gets built and who signs off on it.

The Edwards is karst limestone, riddled with fractures, caves, and the recharge features that feed Comal Springs, the largest springs in Texas. It stores and moves an enormous amount of water, so an Edwards well can give strong flow at moderate depth. But the same fractures let surface water in fast, so the level swings with rainfall and the wellhead seal and the water test carry more weight here than anywhere. Below and to the west, the Trinity is the water source, deeper and steadier but slower to give.
